UN chief emphasizes upholding diplomatic inviolability in Ecuador-Mexico situation

António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, expressed alarm over the raid on the Mexican embassy in Quito, Ecuador, which led to the arrest of Jorge Glas. Guterres emphasized the inviolability of diplomatic and consular premises and personnel, stating that this principle must be respected in all cases according to international law. Mexico had granted asylum to Mr. Glas, who was seeking refuge in the embassy, but the Ecuadorian government argued that normal diplomatic rules did not apply due to corruption charges against him.

The breach of the embassy and subsequent arrest of Mr. Glas prompted Mexico to suspend diplomatic relations with Ecuador. Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador criticized the move as authoritarian and a violation of national sovereignty. Other governments in the region, including Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, and Uruguay, also condemned the incursion into the embassy. Mr. Glas had been staying in the embassy since December, and he was taken by police convoy to the airport in Quito before being flown to Guayaquil.

Secretary-General Guterres called for moderation and urged both the Mexican and Ecuadorian governments to resolve their differences through peaceful means. The embassy raid occurred after Mexico granted asylum to Mr. Glas, who is facing additional corruption charges. In 2017, he was convicted of taking bribes from a Brazilian construction company in exchange for awarding government contracts. Mr. Glas maintains that the new charges against him are politically motivated.

The Organization of American States based in Washington DC called for dialogue between Mexico and Ecuador to resolve the diplomatic rift. The organization’s permanent council planned to convene to discuss the importance of strict compliance with international laws, including the guarantee of the right to asylum. The situation highlights the need for adherence to diplomatic principles and the peaceful resolution of disputes between countries.

The incident at the Mexican embassy in Quito underscores the importance of upholding diplomatic norms and principles. Violations of the inviolability of diplomatic premises and personnel can jeopardize normal international relations, which are essential for cooperation between states. The arrest of Mr. Glas and the suspension of diplomatic relations between Mexico and Ecuador have sparked criticism from governments across the region and the political spectrum. It is crucial for both countries to seek a resolution to their differences through peaceful means.

As the situation continues to unfold, it is essential for all parties involved to prioritize dialogue and diplomacy in resolving the diplomatic rift. The rights of asylum seekers must be respected, and international laws must be upheld to ensure a peaceful and lawful resolution to the conflict. Secretary-General Guterres’ call for moderation and peaceful means to address the situation reflects the UN’s commitment to promoting peaceful resolutions to conflicts and upholding diplomatic principles.
