Inna’s life took a drastic turn on the day Russian forces launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. In an instant, she lost everything she had worked so hard to build – her career as a consultant rheumatologist, her home, and her sense of safety. The war that ensued forced her to flee her beloved city of Kharkiv with her two daughters, her parents, and their cat, leaving behind everything they knew and loved.
As the conflict continued to rage on in Ukraine, Inna found herself in London, far from the familiar sights and sounds of her homeland. She had to start over from scratch, rebuilding her life in a foreign land that offered both challenges and opportunities. Despite the hardships she faced, Inna never lost hope and continued to pursue her passion for medicine, determined to make a difference in her new community.
Inna’s journey to safety and stability in the United Kingdom is just one of over 260,000 stories of resilience and perseverance that have emerged from the Ukrainian refugee crisis. It is a testament to the transformative power of welcome and the importance of giving skilled refugees the chance to contribute to their new communities.
When the war broke out in Ukraine, Inna and her family were forced to flee Kharkiv amidst the chaos and destruction that surrounded them. With only a few documents and belongings in tow, they embarked on a harrowing journey through Ukraine, Moldova, and Romania, seeking refuge and safety wherever they could find it. Along the way, they encountered kind strangers who offered them food, shelter, and compassion, restoring their faith in humanity during a time of great uncertainty.
After a long and arduous journey through Bulgaria, Inna finally arrived in the UK in May 2022 through the Homes for Ukraine scheme, a community-led initiative that provides safe accommodation and support to Ukrainian refugees seeking to rebuild their lives. The scheme allowed Inna and her family to find a new sense of security and stability in a country that welcomed them with open arms.
Despite the challenges she faced in adapting to her new life in the UK, Inna remained determined to return to her career in medicine. She encountered barriers such as language difficulties and the lack of recognition of her qualifications, but she refused to let these obstacles stand in her way. Starting in an administrative role at the Lewisham and Greenwich Trust of the NHS, Inna worked tirelessly to improve her English, gain the necessary qualifications, and prove herself as a competent and skilled healthcare professional.
With the support of her colleagues at the NHS, who she affectionately refers to as her ‘work family’, Inna was able to overcome the challenges she faced and return to practicing medicine in her chosen specialty of rheumatology. Through hard work, dedication, and unwavering determination, she was able to rebuild her career and once again provide care and compassion to those in need.
Inna’s story serves as a reminder of the resilience and strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Despite the immense challenges she has faced, she has never lost sight of her goals and dreams, and has continued to strive for a better future for herself and her family. Through her experiences, she has become a beacon of hope and inspiration for other refugees and immigrants who are navigating similar struggles in a new and unfamiliar environment.
As the war in Ukraine continues to ravage the country and displace millions of people, stories like Inna’s remind us of the importance of compassion, empathy, and solidarity in times of crisis. By extending a helping hand to those in need and offering them the support and resources they require to rebuild their lives, we can create a more inclusive and welcoming society that values the contributions of all its members, regardless of their background or circumstances.
Inna’s journey from war-torn Ukraine to a new life in the UK is a testament to the resilience, courage, and determination of the human spirit. It is a story of hope, healing, and transformation, and a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always a glimmer of light that can guide us towards a brighter future.
