The National Capital Region around Washington, D.C. is protected by an integrated air defense system that was installed after 9/11 to monitor the skies and defend against airborne threats. This system is currently undergoing upgrades, including the implementation of the Enhanced Regional Situational Awareness (ERSA) system. The ERSA system, which is monitored by the Eastern Air Defense Sector in Rome, New York, utilizes artificial intelligence-based visual recognition technology to provide a significant increase in capability compared to the previous system. The ERSA system is operated by the National Guard squadron from EADS in partnership with the Army.
The new ERSA cameras, developed by small tech company Teleidoscope, offer both electro-optical visual and infrared views of the landscape. These cameras are equipped with advanced features such as AI-capability, laser range finders, and machine-learning elements. The system has been praised by operators for its extended range, high-definition quality, and enhanced features like IR colorization. The cameras also incorporate a visual warning system that can illuminate the cockpit of non-compliant aircraft, prompting them to change course and contact the FAA.
Despite some initial growing pains, the new ERSA cameras have proven to be a vast improvement over the legacy system. The Defense Innovation Unit project manager involved in the upgrade project highlighted the significant advancements in camera quality and tracking capabilities. The integration of visual warning lasers on the cameras has been effective in deterring non-compliant aircraft from entering restricted airspace, reducing the need for costly military aircraft deployments for investigation purposes. Teleidoscope’s software enhancements played a key role in making their cameras stand out during the testing and acquisition process.
The Defense Innovation Unit facilitated the funding and procurement process for Teleidoscope’s new camera system, with two cameras already installed and operational. The goal is to install seven new cameras per year moving forward. The ERSA system is a critical component of the air defense infrastructure in the National Capital Region, providing enhanced situational awareness and response capabilities to protect against potential airborne threats. The advanced features of the new cameras, including AI capabilities and visual warning systems, offer improved monitoring and response capabilities for air defense operators in the region.
