Denmark expressed its strong disapproval and intention to summon the U.S. ambassador after President Trump appointed a special envoy to Greenland, the Danish autonomous territory that has been a subject of interest for the U.S. administration. President Trump, who has been vocal about the strategic importance of Greenland for security reasons, has even suggested the use of force to secure it.
Since his return to the White House in January 2025, President Trump has made it clear that he believes the U.S. needs access to the resource-rich island of Greenland. Despite the opposition from both Danish and Greenlandic leaders, President Trump appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as a special envoy to Greenland on Sunday. This move has sparked outrage and concern among Danish officials, with Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen expressing deep anger and emphasizing the need for Washington to respect Denmark’s sovereignty.
In response to the appointment, President Trump took to social media to praise Landry’s understanding of the importance of Greenland to U.S. national security. He stated that Landry would work to advance the country’s interests for the safety, security, and survival of allies and the world. Landry, in turn, expressed his honor in serving in this capacity to integrate Greenland into the U.S.
The Danish foreign minister condemned the appointment and the statements made by President Trump and Landry as “totally unacceptable.” He announced that the Danish Ministry would be calling in the U.S. ambassador to seek an explanation for the actions taken. Emphasizing the importance of Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland, Rasmussen stated that any attempts to undermine that sovereignty would not be tolerated.
Despite the controversy surrounding the appointment, Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen made it clear that the decision would not impact Greenland’s determination to determine its own future. He asserted that Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders, and its territorial integrity must be respected. A majority of Greenland’s population has expressed a desire for independence from Denmark, but not to become part of the U.S.
The strategic location of Greenland between North America and Europe has put it in the spotlight, especially as U.S., Chinese, and Russian interests in the Arctic region continue to rise. The opening of sea lanes due to climate change has further increased the importance of Greenland’s location. Despite its mineral wealth and strategic significance, leaders of both Denmark and Greenland have reiterated that Greenland is not for sale and that its future will be decided by its own people.
Foreign Minister Rasmussen acknowledged the continued American interest in Greenland but emphasized the need for all parties, including the U.S., to respect the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark. The appointment of a special envoy to Greenland has reignited discussions about the region’s future and the importance of respecting the wishes of the Greenlandic people.
As tensions escalate between Denmark and the U.S. over Greenland, the international community will be closely watching how this situation unfolds. The sovereignty of Greenland and the rights of its people to determine their own future will continue to be at the forefront of the debate surrounding this Arctic territory.
