Woman reported witnessing Gaetz engaging in sexual activity with a minor

A woman who attended a party in 2017 with former Rep. Matt Gaetz has come forward to the House Ethics Committee with allegations that she witnessed the then-congressman engaging in sexual activity with a minor. The woman’s attorney, Joel Leppard, issued a statement on Friday urging the committee to release the findings of its investigation into Gaetz.

The House Ethics Committee had been scheduled to vote on whether to release their report on Gaetz, but the meeting was canceled after President-elect Donald Trump announced his intention to nominate Gaetz as attorney general, and the Florida Republican subsequently resigned from Congress.

In his statement, Leppard raised concerns about the potential disqualifying conduct detailed in sworn testimony regarding Gaetz’s behavior. He questioned whether such conduct should prevent Gaetz from serving as the nation’s chief law enforcement officer if confirmed as Attorney General.

The woman represented by Leppard is one of at least four individuals who have informed the committee that they were paid to attend parties where drugs and sexual activities took place in Gaetz’s presence. These accounts align with the testimony of a former minor who stated that she had engaged in sexual relations with Gaetz when she was 17 years old.

John Clune, the attorney for the minor, emphasized that she was a high school student at the time of the alleged incident and that there were witnesses to corroborate her claims. He also joined Leppard in calling for the release of the committee’s report on Gaetz.

CBS News has reported that the committee possesses Venmo transactions linked to Gaetz that purportedly show payments made to women. Gaetz has consistently denied any wrongdoing, including the allegations of sexual misconduct with a minor, characterizing the investigation as a smear campaign.

While the Department of Justice previously looked into Gaetz’s involvement with the minor as part of a sex trafficking inquiry, no charges were ultimately filed against him. House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed his desire for the House Ethics Committee to withhold the report on Gaetz’s investigation.

Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has expressed interest in reviewing the report. Similarly, GOP Sen. Mike Rounds of South Dakota, although not on the Judiciary Committee, stated in an interview on CNN that access to the report should be granted in the same manner as other nominations.

As the controversy surrounding Gaetz continues to unfold, it has raised serious questions about the conduct of public officials and the accountability mechanisms in place to address allegations of misconduct. The House Ethics Committee’s decision on whether to release their report could have significant implications for Gaetz’s political future and the broader conversation surrounding ethics and integrity in government.

In light of these developments, it is essential for transparency and accountability to prevail as the truth regarding the allegations against Gaetz is sought. The public’s trust in its elected representatives hinges on their adherence to ethical standards and the fair and impartial investigation of any claims of wrongdoing. Only by upholding these principles can the integrity of our democratic institutions be preserved and the public’s confidence in its leaders restored.
