UN staff detained in Yemen, peacekeepers killed in Sudan, attacks in Ukraine

The United Nations (UN) is facing a critical situation as 69 of its staff members are currently being held by the Houthis, a rebel group in Yemen. This latest incident, which occurred on Thursday, has raised concerns about the safety and security of UN personnel in the region. The detentions have also had a significant impact on the delivery of humanitarian assistance in Houthi-controlled areas, directly affecting millions of people in need.

UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric expressed deep concern over the situation, stating that the detentions have made it impossible to provide life-saving assistance to those in need. He called for the immediate and unconditional release of all UN staff members, as well as personnel from non-governmental organizations (NGOs), civil society, and diplomatic missions who have been arbitrarily detained by the Houthis.

Secretary-General António Guterres echoed Dujarric’s sentiments, urging the Houthis to release all detained personnel and to respect international law, including the privileges and immunities of the UN and its staff. He emphasized the importance of creating a secure and principled environment for humanitarian action to take place.

In response to the crisis, the UN is working tirelessly to secure the release of all detained colleagues. The Secretary-General and the UN are engaging with Member States, the Security Council, and directly with the Houthis to address the situation and ensure the safe return of all UN personnel.

Meanwhile, in Sudan, the bodies of six Bangladeshi peacekeepers who were killed in a drone attack on their camp in Kadugli, South Kordofan, have been repatriated to their home country. The peacekeepers, who were serving with the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), were honored and remembered for their service and sacrifice.

UN Spokesperson Dujarric expressed deep condolences to the families of the fallen peacekeepers, as well as to the Government and people of Bangladesh. He reiterated that attacks against UN peacekeepers are unacceptable and may constitute war crimes. Dujarric emphasized the need for accountability in such cases and called for justice to prevail.

In the wake of the attack, eight injured peacekeepers are receiving medical treatment in Nairobi, Kenya, while one has been discharged after receiving care at the Mission’s medical facility in Abyei. The UN continues to provide support and assistance to those affected by the tragic incident.

As the UN grapples with these challenges, a new wave of Russian attacks in Ukraine has further exacerbated humanitarian needs in the region. The attacks have severely disrupted critical services, particularly in light of harsh winter conditions. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that between Thursday and Friday, several fatalities and more than 30 injuries were recorded by Ukrainian authorities.

Infrastructure, such as bridges and railway stations, has been targeted in the attacks, making it difficult for humanitarian organizations to reach those in need. The situation in Ukraine remains volatile, with escalating violence threatening the lives and well-being of civilians in the region.

Humanitarian organizations are working tirelessly to support those affected by the deadly attacks in Ukraine, but the ongoing conflict poses significant challenges to delivering aid and assistance. The UN and its partners are calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities and for all parties to respect international humanitarian law to ensure the safety and protection of civilians in the region.

In conclusion, the UN is facing multiple crises across different regions, from Yemen to Sudan to Ukraine. The safety and security of UN personnel, as well as the delivery of humanitarian assistance, are paramount concerns in the face of escalating violence and conflicts. The international community must come together to address these challenges and work towards peace, stability, and the protection of human rights for all those affected by crisis and conflict.
