Senior leaders focus on mission modernization during visit to 90th MW

Leaders from the U.S. Air Force, including Acting Under Secretary Kristyn Jones, visited F.E. Warren Air Force Base to gain a better understanding of how Airmen carry out the nuclear deterrence mission and to assess the need for changes with intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) modernization efforts. During the visit, they toured missile alert facilities and launch facilities, engaging with missileers and maintenance teams to learn about their operations and the importance of modernizing the Minuteman III weapon system. The visit aimed to provide critical insights into sustaining the mission capabilities and quality-of-life improvements needed for continued success.

The visiting team, which also included Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center commander Maj. Gen. John Newberry and U.S. Space Force Brig. Gen. Brian Denaro, received a mission brief at 20th Air Force headquarters before heading to the missile field. They visited Alpha-01, one of the missile alert facilities in the vast missile field at F.E. Warren AFB, and toured a launch facility to interact with Airmen responsible for maintaining the MMIII weapon system. The visit highlighted the dedication and diligence of Airmen in upholding strategic deterrence efforts and executing the Sentinel transition, underscoring the importance of providing necessary resources for mission success.

The visit concluded with a flight back to the installation on a UH-1N Huey from the 37th Helicopter Squadron, showcasing the critical role of helicopters in supporting the base’s mission. The team gained an aerial perspective of the missile field and learned about challenges faced by pilots due to wind turbine farms in the flight area. The 2024 National Defense Authorization Act was noted for providing measures to protect helicopter crews and enhance the security of nuclear operations by establishing a buffer zone around ICBM facilities to prevent new construction that could pose risks to vital security and flight operations. The visit highlighted the commitment to supporting Airmen in their mission and ensuring the safety and effectiveness of nuclear deterrence efforts.
