Jimmy Wales doubts Grokipedia will resemble Wikipedia

Jimmy Wales, co-founder of Wikipedia, considers himself a “pathological optimist” and is surprised by the success of the online encyclopedia. Wikipedia’s model of allowing anyone to edit entries seemed crazy to Wales, especially in comparison to the chaos of social media. Despite this, Wikipedia has become one of the few things people trust, alongside platforms like Airbnb, Uber, and Ebay. Wales believes that the decline of trust in politicians, mainstream media, and each other has led to political deadlocks and even politically motivated violence, as seen in the murder of British MP Jo Cox in 2016.

Wales’ first book, The Seven Rules of Trust, delves into what Wikipedia and other trustworthy internet platforms can teach us about rebuilding trust in a skeptical world. He emphasizes the importance of being able to have dialogue and find compromise, which he believes is lacking in today’s society. Despite Wikipedia’s reputation for trustworthiness, it has recently come under fire from various critics, including Elon Musk, David Sacks, Tucker Carlson, and even Wales’ co-founder Larry Sanger, who accuse the platform of bias.

In response to these criticisms, Elon Musk released a Wikipedia rival called Grokipedia in October, claiming to use AI to avoid bias. This move came just before Wales published his book, further highlighting the ongoing debate around trust in online platforms. Wales remains optimistic about the future of Wikipedia and its ability to maintain trust among users, despite facing challenges from high-profile detractors. He believes that the principles behind Wikipedia, such as open editing and collaboration, can serve as a model for rebuilding trust in a world where skepticism is prevalent.

As society grapples with a breakdown of trust in institutions and each other, Wales sees Wikipedia as a beacon of reliability in a sea of uncertainty. He acknowledges the challenges facing the platform, including accusations of bias and competition from alternative sources like Grokipedia. However, he remains committed to the core values of Wikipedia and believes that they can serve as a guide for rebuilding trust in an increasingly polarized world. Ultimately, Wales’ message is one of hope and resilience, as he continues to advocate for transparency, collaboration, and trust in an era where these values are in short supply.
