Hegseth: Trump Sends 500 More Troops to D.C. Post-Shooting

In an announcement made on Wednesday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that the Trump administration plans to deploy an additional 500 members of the National Guard to the streets of Washington, D.C. This move comes in the aftermath of a shooting incident that took place a few blocks away from the White House, resulting in the injury of two service members.

The Defense Secretary made this announcement during his visit to the Dominican Republic. He stated that President Trump had ordered the additional deployment. In a speech made on Wednesday night, addressing the shooting incident, President Trump confirmed that he had indeed directed the department to mobilize an additional 500 troops to D.C. An unnamed U.S. official had earlier informed CBS News that the Army had received the request and will be working expeditiously to fulfill it.

These 500 additional service members will join an existing representation of approximately 2,200 troops who have been stationed in D.C. since Sunday morning. This count includes around 900 members of the D.C. National Guard and over 1,200 members from several states’ Guard forces. This information comes from a press release issued by the military’s Joint Task Force – District of Columbia.

As of now, it is unclear when these additional 500 troops will arrive in the nation’s capital. Also, it is not certain whether the troops will be sourced from the D.C. National Guard or if they will be drawn from a state’s National Guard force.

The Defense Secretary’s announcement comes in the wake of an attack on two members of the West Virginia National Guard in the capital. One of the victims in the shooting, 20-year-old Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, succumbed to her injuries, as stated by President Trump on Thursday night. The second victim, Air Force Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, 24, is in critical condition post-surgery, as reported by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro on Thursday.

In connection with the shooting, a suspect has been taken into custody and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital. Reacting to the incident, Hegseth stated, “This will only stiffen our resolve to ensure that we make Washington, D.C., safe and beautiful.”

The initial deployment of National Guard forces on the streets of D.C. took place in August, as a part of an anti-crime mission initiated by the Trump administration. This mission also involved federal law enforcement officers and local police authorities.

However, this deployment has not been without controversy. D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb has filed a lawsuit against it, labeling it as illegal. A federal judge ruled last week that the deployment likely violates federal law, but has delayed the ruling for 21 days while the Trump administration files an appeal.

The deployment of an additional 500 troops is seen as a significant move by the Trump administration in its effort to curb crime in Washington, D.C. The unfortunate shooting incident, resulting in the death of a service member and critical injury to another, has underscored the necessity for this move. As the Trump administration continues with its appeal against the ruling of the federal judge, it remains to be seen how this situation will evolve.

In the meantime, the National Guard, local police, and federal law enforcement officers continue their joint efforts in maintaining law and order in the nation’s capital. As the Defense Secretary stated, this incident will only stiffen their resolve to ensure safety in Washington, D.C. Amidst this challenging situation, the brave service members of the National Guard, along with other law enforcement agencies, continue to risk their lives to maintain peace and security in the capital city, underscoring the critical role they play in our society.
