Vice President Kamala Harris has accepted CNN’s invitation for a possible second debate and has challenged former President Donald Trump to join her on the debate stage. The announcement came from Harris campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon in a statement released on Saturday, stating that the Democratic nominee is ready for another opportunity to share a stage with Trump and has accepted the network’s invitation for a debate on Oct. 23. O’Malley Dillon emphasized that “the American people deserve another opportunity to see Vice President Kamala Harris and Donald Trump debate before they cast their ballots.”
In a separate statement posted on X, Harris called on Trump to join her in the debate. However, at a rally in Wilmington, North Carolina on Saturday, the former president argued that it was “too late” to have another presidential debate with only 45 days left until Election Day. Trump expressed his reluctance to participate in another debate by saying, “The problem with another debate is that it’s just too late, voting has already started. Now she wants to do a debate right before the election with CNN because she’s losing badly.”
The Harris campaign wasted no time in calling for a second debate between the two nominees shortly after their Sept. 10 meeting on ABC wrapped up. Trump has previously stated that he would not engage in another debate after participating in a CNN debate against President Biden in June. O’Malley Dillon pointed out that Trump should have no issue agreeing to this debate as it follows the same format and setup as the CNN debate he attended in June, where he praised CNN’s moderators, rules, and ratings.
CNN reported that the proposed debate would mirror the one between Trump and Biden and would also take place in Atlanta. This decision was made in light of Mr. Biden’s poor performance in the June debate, which led to weeks of calls for him to drop out of the race. On July 23, the president stepped aside in his reelection bid and endorsed Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee.
Meanwhile, the vice presidential contenders, Governor Tim Walz and Senator JD Vance, are scheduled to participate in their own debate hosted by CBS News on Oct. 1. This debate will provide a platform for the two candidates to present their policies and positions to the American people ahead of the upcoming election.

Overall, the decision to hold a potential second debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump has sparked interest and anticipation among the American public. It remains to be seen whether Trump will accept the challenge and join Harris on the debate stage for a lively and informative exchange of ideas.
