AI Leaders Toast to Putting Humanity at the Center

The second annual TIME100 AI Impact Dinner took place at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, bringing together leaders, innovators, and visionaries from the world of artificial intelligence. The event celebrated the third annual TIME100 AI list, which recognizes the 100 most influential people in AI. This year’s list includes 84 new honorees, reflecting the dynamic nature of the field, with individuals ranging in age from 15 to nearly 80. The goal of the TIME list is to emphasize that it is people, not machines, who will shape the future of AI, with honorees representing various aspects of the discipline.

The event featured four toasts delivered by 2025 TIME100 AI honorees, focusing on the responsible use of AI, the importance of regulation, protecting human creativity, and fostering collaboration between human and machine intelligence. Stuart Russell, a professor of computer science at the University of California, Berkeley, and co-founder of the International Association for Safe and Ethical AI, delivered the first toast. Russell emphasized the need to make wise choices about how we use AI, highlighting the potential existential risks involved. He warned about the dangers of building AI systems more intelligent than humans without knowing how to control them reliably, stating that the consequences could be catastrophic.

Russell specifically addressed the use of large language models (LLMs) in AI, cautioning that these systems are trained to imitate human beings and may absorb human-like goals, which could lead to unintended consequences. He urged the audience to recognize the possibility that humanity may be heading towards a cliff with no steering wheel and a blindfolded driver. Despite these concerns, Russell expressed some optimism, suggesting that by making thoughtful decisions and taking proactive measures, it is possible to steer AI in a positive direction.

The other toasts at the event focused on the importance of regulation to guide AI development responsibly, protecting human creativity in the face of automation, and fostering collaboration between humans and machines. These themes underscored the need for ethical considerations, human-centered design, and a thoughtful approach to integrating AI into various aspects of society. The discussions at the TIME100 AI Impact Dinner highlighted the complex and multifaceted nature of AI’s impact on business and society, emphasizing the critical role of human decision-making in shaping the future of this rapidly evolving technology.
