Trump agrees to Fox debate, Harris sticks with ABC plan

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has announced that he has accepted an offer from Fox News to participate in a debate with presumptive Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris. However, the Harris campaign has stated that they will adhere to the original plan for a debate with ABC News.

In a post on his Truth Social account, former President Trump revealed that the proposed Fox News debate would take place on September 4. Trump explained, “I have agreed with Fox News to debate Kamala Harris on Wednesday, September 4th. The Debate was previously scheduled against Sleepy Joe Biden on ABC, but has been terminated in that Biden will no longer be a participant, and I am in litigation against ABC Network and George Slopadopoulos, thereby creating a conflict of interest.”

Trump also mentioned that the debate location would be in Pennsylvania, at a site to be determined. He specified that the moderators for the debate would be Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum, with rules similar to the ones used in his debate with Biden, but with a full arena audience.

On the other hand, the Harris campaign responded by accusing Trump of trying to avoid the previously agreed-upon debate with ABC News. Michael Tyler, the communication director for the Harris campaign, stated, “Donald Trump is running scared, hoping that Fox News will bail him out of the debate he had already agreed to with ABC News. He needs to stop playing games and show up to the debate he already committed to on Sept. 10.”

Tyler also mentioned that the campaign is open to discussing additional debates but only after the initial one that both campaigns had agreed upon takes place. He challenged Trump by saying, “Mr. Anytime, anywhere, anyplace should have no problem with that unless he’s too scared to show up on the 10th.”

In a separate statement on X (formerly Twitter), Harris expressed her readiness to participate in the debate on September 10, as initially agreed upon. She remarked, “It’s interesting how ‘any time, any place’ becomes ‘one specific time, one specific safe space.’ I’ll be there on September 10th, like he agreed to. I hope to see him there.”

It is worth noting that Trump and President Biden, when Biden was still in the race, had agreed in May to partake in two presidential debates. The first debate took place in June and was hosted by CNN, while the second debate was scheduled for September 10 and was supposed to be hosted by ABC News.

Harris had previously accused Trump of reneging on his commitment to the September 10 debate, stating, “I’m ready.” Following Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race, Harris announced her candidacy and has since garnered the support of a majority of delegates required to secure the Democratic nomination. The Democratic National Convention is set to take place from August 19-22 in Chicago.

In a significant development, a majority of Democratic delegates voted to select Harris as the party’s nominee for president in a virtual roll call vote, solidifying her position at the top of the ticket for the November election. CBS News has extended invitations to both the Harris and Trump campaigns for participation in vice presidential and presidential debates scheduled for early September.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the dynamics of the upcoming debates between Trump and Harris will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the narrative leading up to the election. The clash of ideologies, policies, and personalities is set to take center stage as the two candidates prepare to engage in a battle of wits and rhetoric on the national stage. The outcome of these debates could potentially sway undecided voters and influence the direction of the election.

Overall, the decision by Trump to engage in a debate with Harris on Fox News has set the stage for a high-stakes showdown between the two candidates vying for the highest office in the land. The American public will be watching closely as the drama unfolds, eager to see how each candidate performs under the spotlight and how their respective visions for the country resonate with voters.
