According to a report by UNICEF, there has been a significant increase in the recruitment of minors by armed gangs, with the number of child recruits rising by 70 per cent in the past year.
Ulrika Richardson, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Haiti, recently spoke with UN News about the United Nations’ efforts to support the people of Haiti during this challenging time. In the interview, Richardson described the situation in Haiti as a terrifying escalation of violence in certain parts of the country, leading to horrific massacres in places like Port-au-Prince and l’Artibonite. These acts of violence are deeply traumatizing for the Haitian population and require urgent attention.
As the UN remains committed to staying in Haiti to assist the most vulnerable individuals through the ongoing crisis, Richardson emphasized the need to prioritize mental health and psychosocial support programs for those affected. The UN is working to protect internally displaced people, particularly in Port-au-Prince, where security forces are struggling to maintain order and ensure the safety of citizens. Families who have been forced to flee their homes multiple times are in desperate need of support to live in decent conditions and begin the process of recovery.
Despite facing challenges and setbacks, the UN is working closely with the Haitian government, transitional authorities, civil society, and the private sector to improve the situation in 2025. The deployment of the Multinational Security Support Mission, led by Kenya, has encountered delays due to insufficient funding from the international community. While some contributions have been made, they are limited, hindering the mission’s progress.
The current security situation in Haiti is a critical factor that must be addressed before tackling humanitarian challenges and focusing on long-term recovery efforts. The UN is dedicated to supporting the most vulnerable individuals in Haiti and ensuring that they receive the assistance they need to rebuild their lives and communities.
