Northern Gaza’s last hospital rendered inoperable after recent attack

The recent raid on a hospital in Gaza, reportedly carried out by Israeli forces, has caused widespread destruction and chaos. The hospital, which saw areas such as the laboratory, surgical unit, and medical store burnt and severely damaged, is now in a state of disarray. The director of the hospital, Dr. Abu Safiya, has been detained during the raid, and the World Health Organization (WHO) has lost contact with him.

Reports have emerged that a number of people were stripped and forced to walk towards southern Gaza, while critically ill patients were forced to relocate to the Indonesian Hospital. Unfortunately, the Indonesian Hospital lacks the necessary equipment and supplies to provide adequate care for these patients, putting their lives at risk. In response to this urgent situation, WHO is planning a mission to Indonesian Hospital to safely move the patients to southern Gaza for continued care.

The WHO has condemned the raid as part of a larger pattern of attacks on the health system in Gaza. Over the past two months, there have been daily attacks on health workers and hospitals in the area. Just this week, bombardments in the vicinity of the hospital reportedly killed 50 people, including five health workers from Kamal Adwan Hospital. The situation is dire, with the deployment of international emergency medical teams repeatedly denied and limited access to emergency and trauma services and supplies.

Despite these challenges, WHO missions have managed to deliver 45,000 liters of fuel, medical supplies, blood, and food to the hospital. Additionally, 114 patients and 123 of their companions were transferred to Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City for further treatment. However, the ongoing attacks and restrictions on access to medical care continue to hinder efforts to provide essential services to those in need.

The escalating attacks on healthcare facilities and personnel in Gaza are a cause for grave concern. The systematic dismantling of the health system in the region is putting the lives of patients at risk and hindering efforts to provide critical medical care. The international community must take action to ensure the protection of healthcare workers and facilities in conflict zones like Gaza.

As the situation in Gaza remains volatile, it is essential that humanitarian organizations like WHO are able to access the region to provide much-needed assistance to those affected by the conflict. The safety and well-being of patients and healthcare workers must be prioritized in order to prevent further loss of life and ensure that essential medical services are available to those in need.

In the face of adversity, organizations like WHO are working tirelessly to deliver aid and support to those affected by the conflict in Gaza. Despite the challenges and obstacles they face, their commitment to providing lifesaving medical care remains unwavering. It is crucial that the international community comes together to support these efforts and ensure that healthcare services are accessible to all, regardless of the circumstances.
