The New York Police Department confirmed sightings of drones flying over a neighborhood in the Bronx, although the drones disappeared before officers could respond to the calls.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has called for more resources to be directed towards understanding the increased drone activity in the region. In a letter to President Biden, Murphy expressed concerns about the lack of clarity surrounding the drone sightings and the emergence of conspiracy theories on social media platforms. He urged federal agencies to work together to uncover answers about the drones’ presence and purpose.
During a call-in program, Governor Murphy reassured the public that the drones do not appear to pose a safety threat at this time. He mentioned that he planned to discuss the issue with the White House and emphasized the need for more information about the drones. New York Governor Kathy Hochul also stated that there is currently no evidence that the drones pose a threat, and authorities are collaborating with federal agencies to investigate the sightings.
White House national security spokesman John Kirby stated that they have not been able to corroborate the reported visual sightings of drones. He mentioned that many of the drones are likely manned aircraft being operated lawfully. The New York State Police have received numerous reports of drone sightings and have provided an email address for the public to submit additional reports.
