Lebanon peacekeepers vow to remain and assist in any way possible

The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has faced challenges in recent days as tensions continue to rise in the region. Despite demands from the Israel Defense Forces to move from positions close to the Blue Line, UNIFIL peacekeepers remain deployed in all their positions along the buffer zone. This decision was made unanimously by all Troop Contributing Countries and the UN Security Council, emphasizing the importance of bringing stability and peace to the region.

Andrea Tenenti, Spokesperson for UNIFIL, reiterated the mission’s commitment to ensuring the safety of peacekeepers. He highlighted the daily challenges faced by peacekeepers, including hundreds of trajectories being reported daily, leading to extended hours spent in shelters. Incidents involving the Israeli military that have resulted in injuries to peacekeepers, surveillance cameras, and perimeter walls are considered violations of the 2006 UN Security Council resolution that led to UNIFIL’s current deployment.

Resolution 1701 tasks UNIFIL with monitoring the cessation of hostilities following the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah. It also involves confirming the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon and assisting the Lebanese government in restoring its authority in the area. With over 10,000 peacekeepers, UNIFIL plays a crucial role in maintaining peace and security in the region.

Despite the challenges faced by UNIFIL, the mission continues to fulfill its duties. Daily heavy shelling, exacerbated by IDF incursions into Lebanese territory near the Blue Line, has been reported in both UNIFIL Sectors. These actions are considered violations of Lebanese sovereignty and UN Security Council resolution 1701.

When asked about the use of self-defence by peacekeepers, Mr. Tenenti explained that under Chapter Six of the UN Charter, self-defence can be used, but it must be done in a strategic manner to avoid escalating violence and becoming involved in the conflict. The decision to use self-defence is left to the commanders on the ground, who must assess the situation carefully.

UNIFIL is also actively working behind the scenes to coordinate the safe passage of humanitarian aid to civilians in south Lebanon. However, challenges remain as guarantees for the safety of humanitarian convoys are often not provided, limiting the force’s ability to work with humanitarian agencies effectively.

The destruction in villages along the Blue Line has been significant, with many areas left completely destroyed and damaged. Despite efforts to evacuate civilians, thousands remain in the conflict zone, facing ongoing threats to their safety and well-being.

In conclusion, UNIFIL remains committed to its mission of maintaining peace and security in southern Lebanon. Despite facing numerous challenges, including violations of international resolutions and the safety of peacekeepers, the mission continues to work tirelessly to bring stability to the region. The coordination of humanitarian aid and efforts to protect civilians are top priorities for UNIFIL, as they navigate the complex and volatile situation in the area.
