Guterres: Famine in northern Gaza caused by man-made disaster

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) recently released a report warning that famine is likely to occur in the northern governorates of Gaza anytime between now and May 2024. This projection has raised concerns about the horrifying levels of hunger and suffering that Palestinians in Gaza are currently experiencing. The UN Secretary General, António Guterres, described the situation as an “appalling indictment of conditions on the ground for civilians” and emphasized the urgent need for action to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe.

The FAO report highlighted that the entire population of Gaza, around 2.3 million people, is facing high levels of acute food insecurity, with 1.11 million individuals experiencing catastrophic food insecurity. The situation has worsened since the last assessment in December, with a significant increase in the number of people at risk of sliding into catastrophic levels of hunger. The report emphasized the urgent need for humanitarian access to provide critical assistance to prevent a potential famine.

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) forecasts play a crucial role in informing humanitarian responses to food insecurity. These forecasts are based on on-the-ground assessments and help identify the most vulnerable individuals in need of assistance. The latest IPC report underscored the severity of the situation in Gaza and the need for immediate action to address the growing hunger crisis.

The FAO Deputy Director-General, Beth Bechdol, warned that without a ceasefire and increased humanitarian access, famine in Gaza is imminent. The report highlighted the alarming trend of households in Gaza skipping meals on a daily basis, with adults sacrificing their meals so that children can eat. In the northern governorates, a significant number of households reported going without food for entire days and nights multiple times in the last month, underscoring the dire circumstances faced by many families.

The WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, also expressed concerns about the impact of the crisis on healthcare facilities in Gaza. He emphasized that hospitals should never be battlegrounds and called for the protection of medical workers, patients, and civilians. The deteriorating health situation in Gaza has further compounded the challenges faced by the population, highlighting the urgent need for coordinated international efforts to address the crisis and prevent further suffering.
