Deputy Defense Secretary Commemorates Native American Contributions to Independence and National Security

November is Native American Heritage Month, and the Defense Department is taking this opportunity to recognize the remarkable achievements of Indigenous peoples throughout American history. Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks recently recorded a message highlighting the contributions of Native Americans to national security, specifically mentioning Medal of Honor recipients of Indigenous descent who have served valiantly in conflicts over the years. This recognition aims to honor the sacrifices and dedication of Native Americans in the military.

One significant example of Native American contributions to American history is the role of the Oneida Nation during the American Revolution. The Oneida, part of the Iroquois Confederacy, formed an alliance with General George Washington and the Continental Army, risking their own independence to support the American cause. The tribe played a crucial role in warning American forces of an impending British attack and fought alongside them in key battles, ultimately contributing to the decisive victory at Saratoga.

The Oneida’s support for the Continental Army extended beyond the battlefield during the harsh winter at Valley Forge. Facing food shortages and dwindling morale, Washington turned to the Oneida, nearby farmers, and his allies for support. The Oneida warriors arrived with food and supplies, and an Oneida woman named Polly Cooper provided care and taught the soldiers how to prepare food, saving many from starvation. This act of kindness and support from the Oneida played a significant role in the survival of the Continental Army during a critical time.

Despite facing challenges and internal strife within the Iroquois Confederacy, the Oneida continued to support the American cause throughout the war. Congress expressed gratitude for their assistance and granted them reparations, acknowledging their loyalty and sacrifices. The Oneida’s legacy of service during the Revolution is just one example of the countless contributions of Indigenous peoples to America’s defense. During Native American Heritage Month, the Defense Department celebrates the Oneida and all Indigenous peoples who have played a vital role in shaping the nation’s history and maintaining the strength of the military.
