Air Force Academy Cadet Receives National Undergraduate Leadership Award

U.S. Air Force Academy Cadet 1st Class Jabari Bowen received the Black Engineer of the Year award for undergraduate leadership at a gala in Baltimore, Maryland. Bowen is majoring in electrical and computer engineering and cyber science and is set to graduate in May. His interest in digital technology grew during his time at the Academy, where he served as a summer cyber instructor, guiding cadets through basic cyber skills and missions. Bowen was nominated for the award by his department and was recognized for his outstanding leadership and technical expertise.

Bowen attended the BEYA conference last year, where a fellow cadet won the same award, sparking his interest in the program. Despite not expecting to win, Bowen was chosen for his leadership qualities and technical skills. Lt. Col. Juan Jurado, an assistant professor at the Academy, praised Bowen as an outstanding leader and deserving of the recognition. After commissioning as a second lieutenant, Bowen has been selected to serve as an electrical/electronic engineer and hopes to work with the National Reconnaissance Office in the future.

Bowen’s passion for cyber technology and leadership has been evident throughout his time at the Academy, where he has inspired cadets to take an interest in cyber. His experience as a summer cyber instructor and his internships with the National Reconnaissance Office have prepared him for a future career in satellite operations and safeguarding critical technologies. Bowen’s dedication to his field and his leadership skills have earned him the Black Engineer of the Year award, recognizing his contributions to the field of engineering and cyber science.
