WWII “Ghost Army” members honored with Congressional Gold Medals

Members of the Ghost Army, a top-secret military unit from World War II, were recognized with Congressional Gold Medals for their efforts in saving thousands of American lives through deception techniques. The unit used inflatable tanks and artillery, as well as sonic deception like soundtracks, to trick the Germans into thinking Allied forces were in one location while they advanced elsewhere. Their efforts, carried out by artists, designers, audio technicians, and more, saved an estimated 30,000 American lives and remained classified for many years after the war ended.

President Biden signed legislation honoring the Ghost Army members in 2022, recognizing their unique and distinguished service in conducting deception operations in Europe during World War II. House Speaker Mike Johnson, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and other lawmakers delivered remarks honoring the service members before presenting them with Congress’ highest honor, the Congressional Gold Medal. McConnell praised the Ghost Army’s legacy as a story of commitment, bravery, talent, and ingenuity, acknowledging their crucial role in answering the nation’s call in a time of need.

Three of the seven surviving members of the Ghost Army, Bernard Bluestein, John Christman, and Seymour Nussenbaum, attended the event where they were honored with the Congressional Gold Medal. Family members of the deceased members were also present to witness the recognition of their loved ones’ contributions. Bluestein expressed his pride and happiness at receiving the honor, highlighting the significance of finally being acknowledged for their service after years of being unrecognized due to the classified nature of their unit.

The speakers at the event celebrated the legacy of the Ghost Army, emphasizing the long-unsung contributions of these service members. Senator Ed Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat, noted that the Ghost Army’s tactics were designed to be invisible, but their contributions would no longer remain unseen in the shadows. The event served as a moment to honor and remember the Ghost Army’s unique service to the nation and to express gratitude for their sacrifice and dedication during World War II.

The Ghost Army’s innovative and deceptive tactics played a crucial role in the Allied victory during World War II, with their efforts saving countless American lives. Their use of inflatable tanks, artillery, and sound deception techniques helped deceive the Germans and protect Allied forces. The recognition of the Ghost Army members with Congressional Gold Medals serves as a tribute to their bravery, commitment, and ingenuity in serving their country during a time of great need. Their story is a testament to the often-unseen heroes of war whose contributions are essential to the success of military operations.
