US Ambassador meets Gabon coup leader

A U.S. delegation recently met with the military ruler of Gabon, General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, to discuss the need for a swift return to constitutional order following the coup that took place on August 30. Despite sanctions imposed on Gabon’s coup leaders, the U.S. ambassador to Gabon, Vernelle Trim FitzPatrick, emphasized that economic and diplomatic relations between the two countries will be strengthened. General Nguema pleaded for the U.S. sanctions to be lifted, but Ambassador FitzPatrick stated that the United States is focused on enhancing trade and commercial ties with Gabon.

During the meeting, FitzPatrick highlighted the importance of discussions regarding strengthening trade and commercial relations with Gabon to gain the support of the U.S. Congress in fostering ties with the nation. As the ambassador to Gabon for approximately a month, FitzPatrick also mentioned that the United States is willing to assist with the transition to civilian rule in Gabon, although specific details were not provided. The military, under the leadership of Nguema, had ousted President Ali Bongo Ondimba in a bloodless coup, citing allegations of election rigging and economic mismanagement.

Following the coup, the United States suspended most nonhumanitarian aid to Gabon and called for a prompt return to constitutional order. Gabon’s military leaders announced plans to hold elections in August 2025, following an inclusive national dialogue scheduled for April. Nembe Patrice, an economic adviser at Alternance 2023, an opposition group formed in 2023 to advocate for political change in Gabon, expressed the civilian population’s desire for Nguema to organize elections and transfer power to democratically elected officials. Patrice also expressed hope that the United States would advise Nguema against running as a candidate in future elections.

The situation in Gabon remains complex, with the military ruling the country following the coup and facing pressure from both domestic opposition groups and international actors like the United States to return to constitutional order. The U.S. delegation’s meeting with General Nguema signals a willingness to engage with the military leadership while also emphasizing the importance of democratic principles and civilian governance. As discussions continue around strengthening economic and diplomatic ties between the United States and Gabon, the focus remains on supporting a peaceful transition to civilian rule and ensuring free and fair elections in the future.

The outcome of these discussions and the actions taken by the military leadership in Gabon will have significant implications for the country’s political stability and international relations. The United States’ commitment to assisting with the transition to civilian rule underscores the importance of upholding democratic norms and supporting the will of the Gabonese people. As efforts to facilitate a return to constitutional order progress, the role of international actors, including the United States, will be crucial in shaping the future trajectory of Gabon’s political landscape.
