UN chief denounces increasing civilian casualties in Gaza’s north

Israeli forces carried out airstrikes on tents housing displaced civilians near al Aqsa hospital in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of at least four people and leaving many others, including women and children, with severe burns. This tragic incident occurred in an area where residents from northern Gaza had been instructed to relocate. The indiscriminate attacks on civilians have sparked outrage and condemnation from the international community.

Just hours before this deadly strike, another school serving as a shelter in Nuseirat was also targeted, leading to the deaths of more than 20 individuals and causing numerous injuries. The escalating violence in Gaza has created a humanitarian crisis, with tens of thousands of people being displaced from the Jabalia area. Many others are trapped in their homes amidst the ongoing bombardment and fighting, unable to seek safety or access essential services.

The military operation in Gaza has resulted in the closure of vital infrastructure such as water wells, bakeries, medical facilities, and shelters. Protection services, malnutrition treatment, and education programs have also been disrupted, further exacerbating the suffering of the civilian population. Hospitals in the region are overwhelmed with trauma injuries, stretching their capacity to provide medical care to those in need.

The United Nations has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urged all parties involved to adhere to international humanitarian law, which mandates the protection of civilians during times of conflict. The Secretary-General emphasized the importance of respecting the rights and safety of innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire of the ongoing violence.

The acting UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Joyce Msuya, expressed deep concern over the relentless cycle of violence and suffering endured by Palestinians in Gaza. She condemned the attacks on civilian infrastructure, including hospitals and schools, noting that there is no safe haven for people in the besieged territory. Msuya called for an end to these atrocities and stressed the need to safeguard the lives and well-being of civilians in accordance with international law.

The deteriorating situation in Gaza has also had a devastating impact on food security, particularly for vulnerable families in the northern region. The closure of major crossings and the lack of access for humanitarian aid agencies have left thousands of Palestinians without essential food supplies. The UN World Food Programme (WFP) reported that no food aid has entered north Gaza since October 1, placing residents at risk of hunger and malnutrition.

Antoine Renard, the WFP Country Director for Palestine, highlighted the challenges faced by humanitarian organizations in delivering aid to the affected population. The agency’s limited food stocks in the north have been distributed to shelters and health facilities in Gaza City, but the escalating conflict threatens the continuity of these life-saving assistance programs. Without sustained access and support, WFP warned of dire consequences for families fleeing violence and seeking refuge in overcrowded shelters.

The images of destroyed shelters and displaced families in Gaza serve as a stark reminder of the human cost of conflict and the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the crisis. As the violence escalates in southern and central Gaza, the humanitarian situation is likely to worsen, placing additional strain on already stretched resources and services. The international community must step up its efforts to end the bloodshed and provide much-needed assistance to those affected by the ongoing hostilities.

In the midst of tragedy and despair, there is a glimmer of hope that a ceasefire and lasting peace can be achieved in Gaza. The voices of those impacted by the violence, including innocent civilians and displaced families, must be heard and heeded by world leaders and decision-makers. Only through collective action and a commitment to upholding human rights and international law can the cycle of suffering and destruction in Gaza be broken. It is time for all parties involved to prioritize the protection and well-being of civilians and work towards a sustainable peace that ensures a better future for the people of Gaza.
