Marine Corps Installations Pacific was recently named the 2023 Defense Department fire prevention program of the year. The relationship between fire safety professionals and the communities they serve is crucial for the success of the program. Ulysses Taormina, the regional fire chief of Marine Corps Installations Pacific Fire and Emergency Services, emphasized the importance of fire inspectors in community outreach and ensuring buildings are compliant with regulations to prevent fires from occurring. The department provides fire suppression, emergency medical support, and fire prevention services at installations throughout the region, with a focus on engaging with base families and educating them on fire safety.
The fire prevention team at Marine Corps Installations Pacific conducts numerous fire inspections, public education events, and fire evacuation drills each year to ensure the safety of the community. They also work with school-age children in the military community to teach them the basics of fire safety, including the “stop, drop, and roll” technique. By engaging with the community through educational programs and outreach events, the fire service personnel aim to build a community that prioritizes fire safety. Last year, their efforts led to a high inspection completion rate, reaching thousands of people through various events and drills.
The achievements of the Marine Corps Installations Pacific’s fire prevention program were recognized as part of the 2023 DOD Fire and Emergency Services Awards. The program was commended for its excellence in mission support and fire protection management. The Assistant Secretary of Defense for Energy, Installations, and Environment recognizes top-performing fire departments and individuals each year for their superior job performance and contributions to DOD fire and emergency services organizations. In addition to Marine Corps Installations Pacific F&ES, several other departments and individuals were also recognized in various categories for their achievements in fire prevention and safety.
Ulysses Taormina expressed his gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing that the award reflects DOD’s commitment to safety at all levels of the department. He highlighted the dedication of everyone in the department, from fire inspectors to firefighters and their Japanese partners, who work tirelessly to serve the community. Taormina described the department as a family of professionals who genuinely love what they do and are dedicated to ensuring the safety of the community. The award serves as a testament to the hard work and commitment of the entire department in promoting fire safety and prevention in the Marine Corps Installations Pacific region.
