U.S. Assets in Mediterranean Once Again Aid in Defending Israel from Iranian Missile Threats – U.S. Department of Defense Reports

Iran launched a significant attack on Israel with approximately 200 ballistic missiles, although most were intercepted before causing any damage. The Pentagon press secretary, Air Force Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, condemned the attacks and called on Iran to cease further aggression. The U.S. military worked closely with the Israeli Defense Forces during the attack to help defend Israel. This attack was larger in scale than a previous one in April, and the U.S. once again assisted in intercepting Iranian missiles.

Two Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, the USS Cole and USS Bulkeley, deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean, fired interceptors at the incoming Iranian missiles to protect Israel. It is unknown at this time if the interceptors were successful in taking down any of the missiles. Initial assessments indicate that all the missiles were launched from Iran itself, rather than from proxy states, and Iran’s intent was to cause harm in Israel. Despite the large number of missiles launched, Israel’s air defense capabilities and U.S. assistance helped successfully defend against the attack.

Fortunately, there was minimal damage on the ground in Israel, and no U.S. personnel were injured during the Iranian missile attack. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III communicated with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant both before and during the attack, reaffirming the United States’ commitment to defending Israel. The U.S. remains prepared to protect its forces and Israel in the face of threats from Iran and Iran-backed terrorist organizations. The close coordination between the U.S. and Israel during the attack demonstrates the strong partnership between the two countries in the face of external aggression.

The Iranian missile attack on Israel highlights the ongoing tensions in the region and the threat posed by Iran to its neighbors. The U.S. response, in assisting Israel in defense and condemning the attacks, underscores the commitment to maintaining stability and security in the Middle East. The successful interception of most of the missiles and minimal damage on the ground are positive outcomes in a situation that could have escalated further. The U.S. will continue to monitor the situation and stand ready to defend its interests and allies in the region against any further aggression from Iran.
