Trump clashes with reporters at Black journalists’ event over Kamala Harris’ background

Former President Donald Trump’s appearance at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) convention in Chicago stirred up controversy and hostility from the start. The event, which was scheduled to begin at noon, was delayed for over an hour due to issues with the audio equipment. Trump blamed the delay on the equipment and the event organizers, setting the tone for a tense and confrontational Q&A session.

During the event, Trump faced tough questions from journalists and sparred with interviewer Rachel Scott of ABC News. He claimed to have done a lot for the Black population in the country and expressed his love for them. However, his statements were met with jeers and skepticism from the audience. Trump’s assertion that he was the best president for the Black population since Abraham Lincoln and his comments about people illegally crossing the border and taking “Black jobs” were met with disbelief and criticism.

Trump also addressed questions about his choice of U.S. Sen. JD Vance as his running mate, dismissing the historical significance of vice presidential picks. He also made false claims about Vice President Kamala Harris, suggesting that she only promoted her Indian heritage in the past. These statements were refuted by Harris’ campaign, which warned that Trump would lie about his record.

The decision to invite Trump to the NABJ convention was met with backlash from some members who voiced their concerns. NABJ President Ken Lemon clarified that the invitation was not an endorsement of Trump but rather a platform for dialogue. The decision to hold a Q&A session with Trump led to the resignation of convention co-chair Karen Attiah.

Despite the controversy surrounding Trump’s appearance, presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris offered to address NABJ members virtually after the convention. The event organizers are still working to reach an agreement with her.

The invitation of presidential candidates to the convention has been a tradition for decades, but Trump’s involvement has divided many within the organization. Protesters gathered outside the event, and Mayor Brandon Johnson ensured that appropriate security measures were in place for the former president.

Overall, Trump’s appearance at the NABJ convention in Chicago was marked by tension, controversy, and skepticism from attendees. His statements and claims were met with criticism and disbelief, highlighting the deep divisions and disagreements within the organization. Despite the challenges and controversies, the event served as a platform for important discussions and debates on critical issues facing the Black community and the country as a whole.
