Sen. Menendez to seek reelection as independent in New Jersey

Former agriculture official has testified in the bribery trial of New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez, who is facing federal bribery charges. Menendez has decided to seek re-election as an independent amidst the ongoing trial. The senator filed a petition to run as an independent candidate with nearly 2,500 signatures, well above the required 800 signatures for ballot access. Menendez announced in March that he would not run in the Democratic primary due to allegations that he used his political influence to help businessmen and governments in exchange for gifts and cash. Despite intense political pressure, Menendez has resisted resigning and has left the option open to run as an independent if exonerated.

The filing deadline for independent candidates is approaching, but Menendez can withdraw from the race until August 16 to avoid appearing on the ballot if convicted before then. Prosecutors have painted Menendez as a corrupt politician who solicited bribes in exchange for political favors, involving a halal meat monopoly, Egyptian and Qatari governments, and criminal investigations. Menendez is on trial alongside two businessmen who have all pleaded not guilty, while a third businessman has admitted to buying Menendez’s wife a luxury car to influence the senator. Menendez’s defense team has been shifting blame to his wife, who is undergoing treatment for cancer and will face her trial later.

Menendez has been abandoned by Democratic allies, including New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, who has called for Menendez’s resignation in the past. Menendez’s legal fees have amounted to nearly $4.9 million since October, with limited campaign contributions coming in. His decision to run as an independent has raised concerns among Democrats about potentially losing the seat, with some expressing doubt about his candidacy. Despite the challenges, Menendez’s legal defense fund has been receiving contributions, although the funds are quickly diminishing. Menendez’s trial is expected to last another month, with his wife also facing charges.

The trial has highlighted the tensions within the Democratic party, with some members distancing themselves from Menendez while others remain supportive. Rep. Andy Kim, who is running for the Senate seat, has criticized Menendez for prioritizing personal gain over public service. Menendez’s decision to run as an independent has further complicated the political landscape in New Jersey, with primary polls showing other candidates leading in the race. Menendez’s defense team continues to argue his innocence, claiming that his wife was responsible for the financial dealings at the center of the bribery allegations. Despite the challenges and criticisms, Menendez remains determined to clear his name and seek re-election as an independent candidate.
