RFK Jr. backs Trump, halts run for president

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the son of Robert F. Kennedy and nephew of President John F. Kennedy, made a shocking announcement on Friday in Phoenix. He suspended his independent presidential campaign and endorsed GOP nominee Donald Trump. Kennedy cited three main issues that led to his decision to leave the Democratic Party and throw his support behind Trump: free speech, the war in Ukraine, and what he referred to as the “war on our children.”

Kennedy expressed his lack of belief in a realistic path to the White House and did not want to continue asking his staff, volunteers, and donors to work for a campaign that he felt had no chance of success. He highlighted the importance of addressing issues like processed foods, chemicals, and obesity that are impacting the health of children in the United States.

The decision to endorse Trump was a difficult sacrifice for Kennedy, especially for his wife and children. Despite potential backlash from his family and supporters, Kennedy believed that it was necessary to take a stand on issues that he felt strongly about. He emphasized the importance of love and unity, even in the face of disagreement.

Kennedy’s announcement was met with condemnation from other members of his political family, with his sister Kerry Kennedy calling it a betrayal of their family’s values. However, Kennedy stood by his decision and thanked his volunteers for their hard work on the campaign.

Although Kennedy suspended his campaign, he clarified that he was not terminating it entirely. He planned to remain on the ballot in many noncompetitive states but would remove his name from battleground states where he could potentially act as a spoiler. He also mentioned the possibility of a contingent election scenario where neither Trump nor Vice President Harris could secure 270 electoral votes.

During a rally with Trump in Glendale, Arizona, the former president praised Kennedy and stated that he would have a significant influence on the campaign. Trump promised to establish an independent presidential commission on assassination attempts and investigate chronic health problems and childhood diseases if elected.

Kennedy’s campaign had been actively seeking ballot access in various states, including Arizona, but he ultimately decided to withdraw his candidacy in key battleground states. Despite claims that he could have won the election in an honest system, Kennedy criticized the Democratic Party for what he perceived as a shift towards war, censorship, corruption, and big industry influences.

Jen O’Malley Dillon, the chair of Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign, appealed to Kennedy’s supporters after his endorsement of Trump, emphasizing the need for a leader who would fight for the people and bring the country together. Kennedy’s admission of putting a dead bear cub in Central Park nearly a decade ago added a surprising twist to his campaign.

Although polls did not show Kennedy with enough support to defeat Trump or Harris, he believed that his candidacy could make a difference in battleground states with narrow margins of victory. Kennedy, who has faced personal tragedies with the assassinations of his uncle and father, received Secret Service protection after an assassination attempt on Trump.

In recent years, Kennedy has been known for promoting anti-vaccine conspiracy theories, which led to estrangement from some members of his family who endorsed President Biden earlier in the year. Despite the controversy surrounding his campaign and endorsement of Trump, Kennedy remained resolute in his decision to stand up for issues that he believed in.

Overall, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s decision to suspend his campaign, endorse Donald Trump, and continue advocating for causes he is passionate about reflected a complex mix of personal conviction, family history, and political ideology. His journey from a presidential hopeful to a supporter of the opposing party highlighted the unpredictable nature of politics and the deep divisions within the American political landscape.
