The NATO Partner Staff Officers’ Familiarization Programme took place from 5 to 14 June 2024, with 30 participants from 20 Partner countries visiting NATO HQ and SHAPE. The participants were able to learn about the structures and roles of both headquarters and explore NATO-Partner cooperation. Brigadier General Eray Üngüder emphasized the importance of strategic partnerships in today’s security environment, noting that collaboration with Partners is crucial in addressing global challenges and fostering peace and stability. By working together and sharing resources, common goals can be achieved more effectively.
The Familiarization Programme began at NATO HQ in Brussels, where participants discussed various Partner-related topics, such as the Vilnius Summit, NATO-EU relations, counterterrorism efforts, disaster response, and military cooperation. They were also briefed on partnership policies and programmes, including the Partnership Staff Post (PSP) programme and the Individually Tailored Partnership Programmes (ITPP). This part of the programme aimed to provide an overview of NATO outreach programmes and activities for Partner Staff Officers serving in Partnership-related posts within NATO, National Ministries of Defence, or General/Defence Staffs.
The second part of the programme, held at SHAPE’s Partnership Directorate Military Cooperation Division in Mons, focused on more in-depth exchanges covering various aspects of NATO-Partner military and defence cooperation. This portion aimed to enhance networking and existing partnerships, aligning with NATO’s interest in expanding cooperation as outlined in the 2022 Strategic Concept. The programme reflects NATO’s commitment to strengthening partnerships and fostering mutual understanding among nations to promote peace and stability globally.
Overall, the NATO Partner Staff Officers’ Familiarization Programme serves as a platform for Partner countries to engage with NATO and deepen their understanding of the Alliance’s policies and programmes. By participating in the programme, Partner representatives can enhance their knowledge of NATO’s structures, roles, and cooperation mechanisms, ultimately contributing to the promotion of peace and security worldwide.
