NATO Chiefs of Defence discuss the enhancement of NATO’s defense plans, meeting on May 16, 2024

On 16 May, the NATO Military Committee in Chiefs of Defence Session was held at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, where the 32 Allied Chiefs of Defence discussed the executability of the Alliance’s new defence plans, NATO’s warfighting transformation, and NATO’s ongoing support to Ukraine. The session also included a meeting in the NATO-Ukraine Council format with the Ukrainian military leadership. During the opening of the session, Admiral Rob Bauer, Chair of the Military Committee, emphasized that NATO is stronger and more prepared than ever before, with the integration of NATO and national military planning enabling all Allies to follow the same compass.

The first session of the day focused on warfighting transformation, with the Chiefs of Defence meeting with General Philippe Lavigne, Supreme Allied Commander Transformation (SACT). This session delved into the future of multi-domain operations, the adaptation of NATO’s Command and Control, and the NATO Defence Planning Process. Following this, the NATO-Ukraine Council in Chiefs of Defence format took place, where Major General Anatoliy Barhylevych, Chief of Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, briefed the NATO Chiefs of Defence on the situation on the ground. The Chiefs of Defence reiterated their strong and continued support to Ukraine, recognizing the bravery and sacrifice of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

In the afternoon session, General Cavoli, Supreme Allied Commander Europe – SACEUR, briefed on the executability of the DDA Family of Plans and the way forward regarding NATO’s deterrence and defence posture. Allies are actively working on ensuring that the new defence plans are fully executable. Admiral Bauer highlighted Ukraine’s success on the battlefield, stating that they have demonstrated their ability to achieve unprecedented success with the help of NATO. He stressed the importance of continued support to Ukraine, noting that they have shown that there is nothing they cannot do with the assistance of NATO.
