In 2023, photographers from NATO forces captured thousands of images documenting the historic events of the year. These photos showcased significant political events such as the 2023 NATO Summit in Vilnius, as well as the cooperation and determination of Allied troops during NATO exercises. Among these images were moments of beauty, unity, and humanity that highlighted the essence of NATO’s mission. To further engage the public, four of the favorite photos were selected and put to a vote on social media to determine NATO’s photo of the year for 2023.
The winning photo for NATO’s photo of the year in 2023 was taken on 24 July and featured the British Army’s Royal Lancers participating in Operation Cabrit in Estonia. This operation involved UK troops leading a NATO multinational battlegroup, and the photo captured the Royal Lancers conducting mounted armoured reconnaissance with the Polish Territorial Defence Force’s 2nd Lubelska Brigade. The image highlighted the heritage and teamwork of the troops involved, showcasing the dedication and cooperation within NATO forces during operations.
Other notable photos included in the vote for NATO’s photo of the year for 2023 included Romania’s elite mountain troops training alongside their French Allies in a snowy forest, a German-led naval exercise in the Baltic Sea involving warships and personnel from multiple countries, and a US Army paratrooper participating in an airborne operation in Italy. These images reflected the diversity of activities and collaborations within NATO forces throughout the year, demonstrating the strength and unity of the Alliance in various operations and exercises.
