Man found guilty of murder after shooting 6-year-old boy to death

A California man, Marcus Eriz, has been found guilty of second-degree murder for shooting and killing a 6-year-old boy, Aiden Leos, who was riding in the back of his mother’s car on a busy freeway. The incident occurred on May 21, 2021, when Eriz and his girlfriend, Wynne Lee, cut off Aiden’s mother’s car and she responded with a rude gesture. Eriz then pulled out a gun, fired a shot at the car, and the bullet pierced Aiden’s heart. Authorities searched for the killer for over two weeks before arresting Eriz and Lee. Eriz, who admitted to firing the shot, is facing 40 years to life in prison.

The shooting shocked the community and drew international attention, as Orange County heavily relies on freeways for transportation. Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer emphasized that those who use violence and harm others will pay the price. He described Aiden as a “precious, innocent little boy” and highlighted Eriz’s life sentence as the consequence of taking Aiden’s life.

Eriz’s defense argued that the shooting was not intentional and that he did not realize he had killed someone until days later. The defense claimed that the incident began as a road rage incident. Eriz’s attorney, Randall Bethune, did not comment on the verdict. Lee, who has pleaded not guilty to being an accessory after the fact, will be tried separately.

The jury deliberated for a little over an hour before reaching a verdict. Orange County Superior Court Judge Richard M. King thanked the jurors and offered counseling if needed. The sentencing for Eriz is scheduled for April 12. The case has highlighted the importance of road safety and the consequences of using violence in conflicts on the road.
