Majority of Americans unconvinced about EVs despite Biden’s support, poll shows

A recent poll conducted by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago shows that many Americans are still hesitant to purchase electric vehicles (EVs) due to high prices and a lack of easily accessible charging stations. Only 4 in 10 U.S. adults say they would be somewhat likely to buy an EV, while 46% say they are not likely to purchase one. Concerns about range anxiety, or the fear of running out of battery power while driving, continue to be a major factor preventing Americans from purchasing EVs.

Younger people are more open to considering an EV purchase than older adults, with over half of those under 45 saying they are at least somewhat likely to consider buying an EV. However, only 21% of U.S. adults say they are very or extremely likely to buy an EV for their next car. Cost is a major concern for many, with nearly 6 in 10 adults citing cost as a reason they would not purchase an EV. The average price for a new EV was $52,314 in February, which is higher than the average price for all new vehicles.

Concerns about range and charging infrastructure are leading some Americans to consider gas-engine hybrids, which allow driving even when the battery runs out. While EV prices are declining, cost remains a significant factor for many potential buyers. However, some EV owners, like Jose Valdez from San Antonio, find the benefits of owning an EV outweigh the costs. Valdez owns multiple EVs and enjoys the quiet ride, lower maintenance costs, and environmental benefits of driving an EV.

Despite the push for more Americans to transition to EVs as part of President Joe Biden’s climate agenda, concerns about cost, range anxiety, and charging infrastructure continue to be barriers for many potential buyers. While some, like Ruth Mitchell from Eureka Springs, Arkansas, are enthusiastic about their EVs and the benefits they provide, others, like Daphne Boyd from Ocala, Florida, remain hesitant due to concerns about the environmental impact and practicality of EVs. Overall, the poll highlights the challenges and opportunities in the transition to electric vehicles in the United States.
