Israeli army destroys UN peacekeeping site in southern Lebanon, claims deliberate demolition

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) issued a press statement on October 20, 2024, expressing concern over the deliberate demolition of a watchtower and fence surrounding the Marwahin site by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). The statement emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and security of UN personnel and property, as well as respecting the inviolability of UN premises at all times. UNIFIL reminded all actors, including the IDF, of their obligations under international law and Security Council Resolution 1701, which aimed to bring an end to the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah and promote security along the Israel-Lebanon border.

The mission highlighted that the Israeli army had repeatedly requested UNIFIL to vacate its positions along the Blue Line and had deliberately damaged UN positions. Despite this pressure, UNIFIL reaffirmed its commitment to fulfilling its mandated tasks of monitoring and reporting in the region.

The press statement also mentioned a series of security incidents in recent days, which resulted in the injury of five peacekeepers. Just four days prior to the October 20 incident, peacekeepers near Kafer Kela observed an IDF Merkava tank firing at their watchtower, resulting in the destruction of two cameras and damage to the tower. UNIFIL condemned the direct and apparently deliberate fire on its position.

On October 13, 15 peacekeepers experienced “smoke effects” after the IDF fired rounds near their position, which had been breached earlier that day. Several UN positions were damaged, and cameras and lights were destroyed in the incident. Top UN officials, including the Secretary-General, expressed concern over the situation and reiterated the importance of guaranteeing the safety and security of UN personnel and property, as well as respecting the inviolability of UN premises.

The Secretary-General warned that attacks against peacekeepers could contravene international law and may constitute war crimes. The incidents underscored the challenges faced by UNIFIL peacekeepers in carrying out their duties in a volatile and tense environment.

The ongoing tensions in the region have raised concerns about the potential for further escalation and the impact on stability and security along the Israel-Lebanon border. Efforts to uphold international law and Security Council resolutions are crucial in preventing conflict and promoting peace in the region.

UNIFIL’s statement highlighted the importance of dialogue and cooperation among all parties to address security concerns and prevent incidents that could jeopardize the safety of peacekeepers and civilians in the area. The mission remains committed to fulfilling its mandate and working towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Lebanon.
