An investigation is ongoing into the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, who made a public appearance at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Monday night. This marked his first public appearance since being shot and injured at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.
The crowd at the convention cheered for Trump, whose ear was bandaged following the bullet that hit him on Saturday. Details surrounding the moments leading up to the shooting are slowly coming to light. People had alerted law enforcement about a gunman on the roof of a building approximately 410 feet away from the stage at least two minutes before the first shot was fired at Trump, as evidenced by video analyzed by CBS News.
According to a local law enforcement officer with direct knowledge of the incident, three snipers were stationed inside the building that the shooter used for his attack. These snipers were part of the operations plan and were positioned inside the building, looking out windows towards the rally. One of the snipers spotted the gunman, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, outside the building, observing and then disappearing. Crooks returned, sat down, and looked at his phone. At this point, one of the snipers took a picture of him. Crooks then took out a rangefinder, prompting the sniper to radio the command post. Crooks disappeared again and returned a third time with a backpack. The snipers reported to the command post that Crooks had a backpack and was walking towards the back of the building.
Authorities believe that Crooks may have used an air conditioning unit to access the roof of the building. By the time other officers arrived for backup, he had already climbed onto the roof and positioned himself above and behind the snipers inside the building. Two other officers attempted to access the roof upon hearing the sniper’s call for backup. State police began rushing to the scene, but a Secret Service sniper had already taken down Crooks by that time.
The FBI is delving into whether the shooter was politically motivated or a homegrown domestic violent extremist. Investigators are currently scrutinizing Crooks’ background, and Justice Department officials have confirmed that they have his phone and are examining it at the FBI lab in Quantico, Virginia.
The attempted assassination of a former president is a shocking and disturbing event that has sent ripples throughout the nation. The fact that such an incident occurred at a political rally further highlights the volatility and polarization of current political climate in the United States.
Former President Trump has been a divisive figure in American politics, garnering both fervent support and vehement opposition. His return to the public eye at the Republican National Convention was eagerly anticipated by his supporters, who cheered for him despite the recent attempt on his life.
