Introducing Lieutenant General Ferenc Kajári, Hungary’s First KFOR Commander – News Report, June 12, 2024

Lieutenant General Ferenc Kajári has a deep understanding of the value of NATO, having been involved in various historical milestones throughout his military career. From leading the Kosovo Force (KFOR) to contributing to Hungary’s accession to NATO in 1999, he has witnessed firsthand the importance of international cooperation in maintaining peace and stability. His career began with a decision to follow the military path at the age of 12, which led him to various postings within the Hungarian Defence Forces infantry brigades before joining NATO’s Implementation Force (IFOR) in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1996.

During his time with IFOR and the follow-on Stabilisation Force (SFOR) mission, Lt Gen Kajári played a crucial role in strengthening Hungary’s ties with NATO as the country moved towards membership in 1999. His involvement with the Alliance continued as a member of Hungary’s working group on NATO accession, where he witnessed the country’s progress on military and civil reforms needed to become a NATO Ally. Joining PfP in 1998 gave Hungary a vision of becoming a NATO member, which became a reality in 1999 when the Hungarian flag was raised at NATO Headquarters.

In 2021, Lt Gen Kajári was appointed as the commander of the KFOR mission in Kosovo, where he led over 3,700 troops for a year. During his time at KFOR, he engaged in various activities to promote peace and stability in the region, including the publication of the KFOR magazine ‘4You’ in Braille for visually impaired youth. As the first Hungarian officer to command KFOR, he aimed to showcase the maturity and capabilities of the Hungarian Defence Forces while ensuring the safety and well-being of his troops.

For Lt Gen Kajári, NATO represents strength, capability, and opportunity. He views the Alliance as a powerful military defense organization that has the ability to defend Allied territory and strengthen stability beyond its borders. NATO also provides opportunities for member countries and individuals to improve, learn, and be more effective in their roles. As one of the generals of the Alliance, he is proud to be part of an organization that brings together 28 Allies and partners with diverse backgrounds to achieve a common goal of providing safety and security.
