Hunter Biden testifies before Congress about family business dealings

Hunter Biden is testifying in a deposition before two House committees as part of the Republicans’ impeachment inquiry into President Biden. The inquiry has focused on allegations that the president profited from his family members’ foreign business dealings while he was vice president. However, the inquiry suffered a setback when a key witness was charged with lying about the first family’s business dealings. The charges against the witness, Alexander Smirnov, have been dismissed as dishonest and uncredible by Hunter Biden’s attorney and the White House.

Lawmakers heard testimony from the president’s brother, James Biden, who stated that Joe Biden had no involvement or financial interest in the business dealings of his family members. However, Republicans argue that Joe Biden was the “brand” his family sold to enrich themselves. They claim that Joe Biden attended meetings and had interactions with his son’s foreign business associates that show his involvement in the dealings, a claim that has been denied by the president and his son. The committee is planning more subpoenas and witness interviews following Hunter Biden’s deposition, with a public hearing eventually planned.

Hunter Biden has been indicted on nine tax charges in California for failing to pay at least $1.4 million in federal taxes between 2016 and 2019. He has since paid off the back taxes with the help of a loan from a Hollywood attorney, Kevin Morris. Morris has denied using the loans to gain access and influence in the White House and stated that his only goal was to help his friend and client. In addition to the tax charges, Hunter Biden faces three federal gun charges in Delaware for allegedly lying about his drug use to buy a gun. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges against him.

The impeachment inquiry has not uncovered any evidence of impeachable offenses against President Biden, despite Republicans’ efforts to involve Hunter Biden in the investigation. The White House has dismissed the inquiry as a baseless political stunt. The focus on the president’s family’s business dealings and allegations of improper actions have not been substantiated. Hunter Biden’s testimony and legal issues have added to the complexity of the situation, but so far, there is no concrete evidence of wrongdoing on the part of the president or his family members. The investigation continues as lawmakers seek more information and witnesses to determine the truth behind the allegations.
