Director of Intel Agency Talks about the Importance of International Partnerships – U.S. Department of Defense Announces Defense Department News

The National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) has been expanding its partnerships with United States’ ally nations, according to NRO Director Chris Scolese. During a fireside chat at a Washington think tank, Scolese highlighted the agency’s long-standing collaboration with international partners and emphasized the recent growth in these relationships. He pointed out that the expansion of partnerships has been beneficial from a strategic standpoint and has caused concern among the agency’s adversaries.

One example of the NRO’s international partnerships expanding is the increased number of locations from which it launches its satellites. While traditionally launching from Florida and California, Scolese mentioned that in the last few years, the agency has also launched satellites from New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and Wallops Island, Virginia. This diversification of launch capabilities demonstrates the agency’s growing international cooperation and its commitment to working with allies to enhance its operations.

Scolese noted that the NRO’s international partnerships play a significant role in information sharing. The agency’s intelligence supply chain is now global, allowing for increased trust and confidence in sharing data with allies. With more satellites orbiting Earth at any given time, the NRO can better coordinate its operations and achieve greater success in fulfilling its mission to collect intelligence for U.S. national security and support disaster relief and humanitarian efforts. The agency’s collaboration with allies has strengthened its capabilities and expanded its reach.

Established in 1960 as a secret agency that was only declassified in 1992, the NRO has a long history of developing and operating innovative overhead reconnaissance systems. With Scolese at the helm as director since 2019, the agency continues to prioritize its mission of collecting intelligence for national security purposes while also supporting humanitarian efforts. The NRO’s expanding partnerships with international allies reflect its commitment to collaboration, information sharing, and strategic cooperation to enhance its capabilities and achieve its objectives.
