Defense Language Institute English Language Center launches updated aviation curriculum

The Defense Language Institute English Language Center (DLIELC) has launched a modernized aviation program designed to enhance the student experience. DLIELC teaches English to international partners, U.S. service members, and civilian personnel, offering English for specific purposes such as career path instruction. The program also aims to build a foundation of security cooperation and partnerships in addition to language skills.

Maj. Erin Doyle and Maj. James Stevens are leading efforts to ensure student pilots receive a comprehensive educational experience, from attending DLIELC to follow-on training. The new aviation modernization curriculum offers tailored educational programs alongside classroom instruction and simulated training for pilot candidates and aircrew in the aviation field. Students must pass English comprehension assessments before progressing to specialized English training, including hands-on experience in a simulator.

The curriculum includes three simulator sessions, each focusing on different scenarios to test students’ reaction times in English. The Aviation Language Training Center provides hands-on training and real-time experience to practice communication skills. The curriculum prioritizes military aviation language development, emphasizing specific language skills and terminology crucial for students entering professional military training.

DLIELC collaborates with the 19th Air Force to address English language challenges on campus and extend efforts to follow-on training. The collaboration allows for site visits and curriculum reviews to provide more in-depth information and training on language acquisition. The goal is to build strong foundational skills to establish security cooperation across the enterprise. DLIELC promotes security collaboration and partnerships by offering English language instruction and cultural immersion to over 100 countries and in more than 30 nonresident locations worldwide.
