The Defense Department is deploying an additional 1,500 active-duty service members to the southern border in response to an executive order issued by President Donald J. Trump declaring a national emergency at the border. This brings the total number of active-duty personnel in the region to 4,000, representing a 60% increase since the president took office. The troops will be tasked with assisting in the placement of physical barriers and other border missions within the next 24 to 48 hours.
In addition to ground personnel, the Defense Department will provide airlift support for flights operated by the Department of Homeland Security to help with the deportation of over 5,000 individuals detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection in San Diego and El Paso, Texas. This support includes two C-130 Hercules and two C-17 Globemaster aircraft provided by U.S. Transportation Command, as well as UH-72 Lakota military helicopters for CBP support. DOD is also coordinating with the State Department to obtain diplomatic visas for deported individuals.
Furthermore, the Pentagon has established a task force to oversee the implementation of border-related executive orders, with U.S. Northern Command leading the effort and support from U.S. Transportation Command, the National Guard Bureau, the military services, and the Department of Homeland Security. The Defense Department is also providing intelligence analyst support at the border and anticipates additional airborne intelligence, surveillance, and support assets to increase situational awareness.
Looking ahead, DOD will develop and execute additional border enforcement missions in collaboration with DHS, federal agencies, and state partners to address the full range of threats outlined by the president at the nation’s borders. Acting Secretary of Defense Robert Salesses emphasized that President Trump expects immediate results in securing the nation’s borders, and the military is working under his leadership to meet those expectations. The deployment of additional troops and resources to the southern border reflects the administration’s commitment to addressing border security concerns and ensuring the safety and security of U.S. citizens.
