DAF SELs emphasize the importance of supporting service members and families: Testimony highlights the need for care

Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force David A. Flosi and Chief Master Sgt. of the Space Force John F. Bentivegna recently testified before a Congressional subcommittee on the importance of quality-of-life initiatives for service members and their families. They highlighted the essential factors for operational and family readiness, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing quality-of-life programs. They also addressed challenges such as childcare and healthcare access and availability, pointing out the impact these have on military readiness and retention.

Flosi stressed the paramount importance of quality of life for service members and their families, citing recent increases in military pay and the need to address inflationary pressures and rising housing costs. He emphasized the non-negotiable need for adequate housing for Airmen and their families. Both enlisted leaders emphasized the value of investing in the well-being of military personnel and their families to maintain readiness and national security, as financial and family responsibilities can affect military core responsibilities if not adequately addressed.

Bentivegna highlighted the unique family needs that military service brings, particularly in the area of childcare. He pointed out that military service brings additional requirements to supporting service members, especially in a field that is already undermanned in the civilian sector. Challenges with childcare access are compounded by the complexity of shift work, making it difficult for Guardians to find childcare outside of normal business hours and weekends.

Flosi also emphasized the importance of supporting military families through the transitions that military service creates, noting the shift in family dynamics and needs in America. He stressed the importance of policies like the Military Spouse Licensing Relief Act in supporting families and improving spouse employment opportunities. Flosi thanked the subcommittee for their support, stating that resilient families are essential for maintaining readiness and mission success. Flosi and Bentivegna were joined in their testimony by their military service counterparts from the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps, demonstrating a unified effort to address quality-of-life issues for service members and their families.
