The Department of the Air Force Chief of Safety, Maj. Gen. Sean Choquette, announced the recipients of the fiscal year 2023 Secretary of the Air Force and Chief of Staff Safety Awards, as well as the Air and Space Forces Chief of Safety Awards. Choquette emphasized that safety is crucial for increasing combat power and maintaining operational readiness in air, space, and cyberspace. The awardees were recognized for their efforts in mitigating risks and preserving the combat capability of personnel and systems.
The FY23 Department of the Air Force Safety Awards Program aims to acknowledge organizations, teams, and individuals for their achievements in safety. Choquette praised the winners for their dedication to ensuring the safety and effectiveness of Airmen and Guardians as they carry out their duties. The recipients of various awards included the United States Air Forces in Europe-United States Air Forces Africa, Air Combat Command, and individuals such as Capt. Harry G. McMahon from Kunsan Air Base, South Korea, and Mr. Takashi Koki from Kadena AB, Japan.
The awards recognized outstanding accomplishments in flight safety, occupational safety, airmanship, and ground safety. Notable recipients included Tech. Sgt Anthony W. Shults from the 352nd Special Operations Wing, Senior Master Sgt. Randy Christian from the 48th Wing, and Maj. Richard R. LaGrua II from the 1st Special Operations Wing. The awards also highlighted the achievements of teams and organizations in maintaining safety standards, such as the B-21 Envelope Expansion Safety Planning Team and the 31st Maintenance Squadron Safety Team.
Additionally, awards were presented for outstanding achievements in space safety, weapons safety, nuclear surety, and aero club safety. Individuals and teams from various Air Force bases and commands were recognized for their contributions to maintaining safety standards and reducing risks. The awards serve to honor those who have demonstrated exceptional skill, alertness, and proficiency in averting or minimizing the seriousness of aviation mishaps, ultimately contributing to the overall safety and readiness of the Air and Space Forces.
