Chairman of NATO Affirms ‘Stronger Together’ as Key Principle, Says U.S. Department of Defense

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was established in 1949 with the belief that nations are stronger when they work together. The treaty was signed by 12 nations, with President Harry S. Truman calling it a simple document that could have prevented the acts of aggression that led to two world wars if it had existed earlier. NATO was born out of the hope for a better future and a commitment to preserve peace and stability, with the understanding that a partnership of nations could provide the best protection against an uncertain future.

Over the past 75 years, NATO has served as a rock of stability, deterring aggression, promoting prosperity, and providing strength for the world. However, the alliance faces challenges in an increasingly complex global security environment. These challenges include aggressive military behavior by China, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and efforts to modernize its military capabilities, Iran’s attempts to increase regional influence through proxies, North Korea’s destabilizing actions, and the ongoing threat of violent extremism. Despite these challenges, NATO remains committed to its purpose and principles of collective defense.

NATO represents more than just a unifying military force in 32 countries; it is a demonstration of the strength that is possible when nations with shared values come together to achieve a shared vision. True integration within NATO requires hard work and cooperation, with joint exercises and collaboration being essential to maximizing the alliance’s advantage. The relationships and collaboration that exist among NATO allies and partners are the alliance’s most significant strategic asset, allowing for the ability to adapt to dynamic situations and shape crises rather than just respond to them.

Looking to the future, NATO must prioritize honing warfighting skills, modernizing capabilities, and fostering trust among service members. By continuously modernizing and pursuing new concepts and approaches, NATO can ensure it has the tools, capabilities, and strategies to adapt to the evolving global security environment. Trust, both among service members and with NATO allies and partners, is essential to the alliance’s strength and effectiveness. As NATO faces new challenges and threats to global stability, the belief in the strength of unity and collaboration remains constant: “We are stronger together.”
