Austin Tice: U.S. committed to returning journalist held in Syria

The collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria has sparked new hope for the return of journalist Austin Tice, who has been missing for over 12 years. The rebel offensive that ended the Assad family’s 50-year rule has prompted President Biden to express optimism about Tice’s potential return to the U.S.

Tice, a Marine veteran and freelance journalist, disappeared on August 14, 2012, while reporting on the Syrian civil war. A video surfaced weeks later showing Tice blindfolded and in distress, but no one has claimed responsibility for his abduction. Despite this, President Biden has stated that the U.S. is certain that Tice has been held by the Syrian regime.

In a recent statement, President Biden reiterated the government’s commitment to bringing Tice home to his family. National security adviser Jake Sullivan also confirmed that the U.S. is working with allies and partners in Syria to track individuals coming out of prisons in hopes of locating Tice.

The State Department has deployed its top hostage negotiator, Roger Carstens, to Lebanon to gather information and facilitate Tice’s return. The Tice family has also been actively involved in advocating for Austin’s release and recently met with Sullivan to discuss the latest developments in the case.

During a press conference, Tice’s mother, Debra Tice, revealed that a “significant source” had provided new information indicating that Austin is alive and well. This information, vetted by the U.S. government, has given the family renewed hope for his safe return. However, they expressed frustration with the government’s handling of the situation and the lack of concrete assurances regarding their efforts.

The Tice family also criticized the government for withholding information about the source of Austin’s well-being, calling for greater transparency in the process. Despite their concerns, they remain hopeful that the recent political developments in Syria could lead to a breakthrough in Austin’s case.

The Tice family’s unwavering determination and advocacy have kept Austin’s story in the public eye, ensuring that his plight is not forgotten. As they continue to push for his safe return, they are grateful for the support of the U.S. government and its allies in the ongoing efforts to bring Austin home.

As the situation in Syria evolves following the fall of the Assad regime, the focus on Austin Tice’s case remains a top priority for the U.S. government. With renewed hope and determination, the search for Austin Tice continues, with the ultimate goal of reuniting him with his family after more than a decade of uncertainty and hardship.
