Austin Hosts JCOC Alumni Event at Pentagon for Business and Community Leaders – U.S. Department of Defense Reports

Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III recently hosted Joint Civilian Orientation Conference (JCOC) alumni at the Pentagon, emphasizing the importance of combined efforts by military and civilian leaders to uphold the value of service. The JCOC is the Defense Department’s oldest public liaison program, providing civilian leaders with an immersive experience at military units across the country to learn about military capabilities and those who serve. Approximately twice a year, DOD selects about 50 corporate leaders and influential members of society to participate in the highly competitive weeklong conference, which has been ongoing since 1948.

During the conference, participants visit various military installations for a firsthand look at the operations and activities performed by each service. Secretary Austin highlighted the growth of the military over the years, attributing its strength to the quality of individuals who serve. He also recognized the important work that JCOC alumni do in their communities to support and give back to those who serve, emphasizing that caring for service members and their families is a top priority under his tenure. Efforts include securing pay raises for troops, cutting costs at commissaries, easing moves for military families, and expanding military spouse employment programs.

The JCOC has completed its 95th iteration this year, with over 7,000 civilians having participated in the program. Defense officials view the conference as a crucial tool to bridge the gap between the military and the rest of American society. As fewer Americans serve in the all-volunteer force, building and strengthening the civilian-military relationship becomes increasingly important. Melanie Fonder Kaye, the deputy assistant to the secretary of defense for strategic engagement, emphasized the role of business and community leaders in spreading knowledge and enthusiasm about the military and the value of service back to their communities.

Secretary Austin urged JCOC alumni to advocate for former service members and their spouses in their organizations, emphasizing the importance of helping veterans transition from military to civilian life and supporting their career development. He highlighted the positive impact that veterans can have on any organization and encouraged the alumni to consider incorporating policies that support military personnel into their organizations. Overall, the JCOC serves as a platform for civilian leaders to gain a deeper understanding of the military and its mission, fostering a stronger connection between the military and American society.
