On 16 May 2024, the NATO Military Committee met in Chiefs of Defence format at NATO Headquarters in Brussels to discuss strengthening the executability of the Alliance’s defense plans and warfighting transformation. This meeting aimed to ensure that all Allies are fully prepared to face current and future threats. Admiral Rob Bauer, the Chair of the NATO Military Committee, and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg jointly opened the meeting, emphasizing the importance of addressing security challenges collectively.
During his opening remarks, Secretary General Stoltenberg condemned the shooting of Prime Minister Robert Fico, stating that such violence goes against the principles of democracy. He highlighted the need for democratic societies to allow for differing opinions and disagreements without resorting to violence. Additionally, Admiral Bauer acknowledged the 813th day of Russia’s large-scale invasion in Ukraine and stressed the importance of continued Allied support for Ukraine in the face of ongoing aggression.
Admiral Bauer also discussed the broader geostrategic implications of the conflict in Ukraine, framing it as a struggle between democracy and autocracy, as well as impunity and accountability. He emphasized the critical juncture at which the world finds itself and the need for NATO to remain united and prepared to respond to evolving threats. Referring to the success of Exercise Steadfast Defender, Admiral Bauer expressed confidence in NATO’s readiness and ability to adapt to new challenges, highlighting the importance of integrating NATO and national military planning.
The meeting concluded with Admiral Bauer expressing optimism about NATO’s strength and readiness, noting that the Alliance continues to grow stronger each day. He highlighted the importance of building on the progress made through exercises like Steadfast Defender and emphasized the need for all Allies to work together towards a common goal. A joint press conference with Admiral Bauer and Supreme Allied Commander Europe General Cavoli was scheduled for later that evening, where they would address the outcomes of the meeting and provide further insights into NATO’s defense plans and strategies.
