The Department of the Air Force recently unveiled a new “Mental Health Overview” guide during the 2024 Mental Health Flight Leadership Conference. This comprehensive resource was created by mental health leaders to provide Airmen and Guardians with information on seeking mental health support. The guide aims to destigmatize mental health, explain the processes for accessing clinical and non-clinical assistance, and offer recommendations on how to utilize available care resources effectively.
Lt. Col. Eric Meyer, the project lead for the “Mental Health Overview,” emphasized the critical need for Airmen and Guardians to understand mental health and have access to all mental health resources in one place. The guide was designed to be user-friendly and accessible across the Department of the Air Force. Col. Christian Smith, the Air Force director of psychological health, highlighted the ongoing efforts within the Air Force to change the culture surrounding mental health and ensure that individuals are equipped to recognize how mental health can impact their overall well-being and resilience.
The “Mental Health Overview” guide contains seven chapters that address common mental health assumptions, differentiate between clinical and non-clinical treatments, and provide guidance on the spectrum of mental health care available for different symptoms and levels of distress. The guide also offers specific options for engaging with Mental Health clinics, expectations for initiating clinical care, and guidance on remission and return to duty. It aims to clarify terminology, provide a common language, and offer help to all Airmen and Guardians.
Meyer and his team of mental health experts used approachable language and tailored infographics to help individuals understand the Air Force’s approach to mental health. The guide emphasizes that stigma is no longer the primary barrier to seeking mental health care, but rather confusion and fear of getting help. By providing information on both clinical and non-clinical resources, the guide aims to ensure that individuals receive the appropriate support for their mental health needs. Physical copies and handouts of the “Mental Health Overview” will be available at Mental Health clinics and Air Force bases to provide easy access to these resources for Airmen and Guardians.
