South Dakota Gov. Noem defends dog’s euthanization in recent book publication

South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem has been under scrutiny for her upcoming book, “No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong with Politics and How We Move American Forward,” where she details the story of killing an unruly dog and a goat. The book is set to be released on May 7, and Noem is scheduled to be interviewed about it on “Face the Nation” next week. In the book, she recounts the story of Cricket, a wirehaired pointer she was training for pheasant hunting, who chased pheasants and killed chickens before biting the governor.

Noem faced backlash after the excerpts from her book were released, with many criticizing her for her actions. She defended her decision to kill the dog, citing South Dakota law that allows for dogs that attack and kill livestock to be put down. She also mentioned that Cricket had shown aggressive behavior towards people by biting them, leading her to make the difficult decision to put the dog down. Noem emphasized that she takes responsibility for her actions, whether in running her ranch or in politics.

In addition to the story of Cricket, Noem also writes about killing a “nasty and mean” male goat in her book. She describes the goat as smelling bad and chasing her kids, leading her to make the decision to shoot and kill it. These stories have sparked criticism on social media, with some users posting photos of their own pets in response to Noem’s actions. President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign also highlighted the story on social media, alongside a photo of Noem with Donald Trump.

Noem has previously attracted national attention, such as when she posted a video about cosmetic dental surgery and when she supported the state’s anti-meth campaign with the tagline “Meth. We’re on it.” Despite facing criticism for some of her actions and statements, Noem has remained a prominent figure in the Republican party and has been considered as a potential running mate for Donald Trump in the upcoming presidential election. Her upcoming book is expected to shed light on her political views and experiences that have shaped her career as a politician.
